Cougar Ridge Lodge: A Luxury Hideaway Near Capitol Reef

There are places you visit for the hotel, and others where the destination itself steals the show. At Cougar Ridge Lodge in Torrey, Utah, the two come together beautifully.

Set amid the extraordinary red-rock landscape of Southern Utah, Cougar Ridge Lodge is a luxury ranch retreat we opted for as an easy gateway to Capitol Reef National Park. Part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and bookable through Hilton (my employer), the property combines the personality of a boutique resort with a distinctly Western sense of place.

Distinct Sense of Place in Red-Rock Country

The setting is really what wowed us when we arrived.

Cougar Ridge Lodge is situated on more than 60 acres just outside Torrey, amid the dramatic scenery that makes this corner of Utah so memorable. The resort’s history is also unusually personal. According to Cougar Ridge, the family behind the property spent more than 50 years visiting the Torrey area before acquiring the land and eventually developing the ranch into the retreat guests experience today.

The primary reason we opted for the resort is because the entrance to Capitol Reef National Park is approximately 10 miles from the lodge, making the property a perfect home base for exploring the park by day while returning enjoying luxurious surroundings afterward.

A Comfortable Kind of Luxury

What I loved most about Cougar Ridge is that luxury wasn’t formal but relaxed and comfortable.

The accommodations combine five-star aspirations with is described as a “down-home” atmosphere. Our accommodations were located in a building housing three separate suites. The casita can be rented as a three-bedroom “home” for larger families or groups or as separate suites. Our suite featured a private deck ideal to watch the sunset over the horse pastures. Some other accommodations offer Traeger grills and private hot tubs.

A wonderful place to retreat to after a day of exploring the gorgeous setting of the nearby national park.

Much More Than Just a Place to Sleep

Cougar Ridge is designed as a destination in its own right, beyond the proximity to the park.

On the property, guests can encounter longhorn cattle, explore by electric bike, enjoy tennis, pickleball or basketball and participate in private rodeo and cowboy experiences. The resort also offers pools and hot tubs, a fitness center and its Pavilion Market.

We enjoyed a bottle of wine on our patio as we saw the beautiful Fall day come to an end, slowly.

In the morning, the lodge offers a very extensive continental breakfast we fully enjoyed in the common space while we could have also brought our food and fabulous coffee to our suite.

Cougar Ridge will soon be offering an onsite restaurant to provide meals beyond breakfast. We had an amazing meal at Hunt & Gather Restaurant nearby with fantastic food and service.

Why Cougar Ridge Stands Out

While there are many luxury hotels, luxury ranch resorts surrounded by the landscapes of Southern Utah are unusual and not easy to find.

We discovered Cougar Ridge because of its affiliation with Small Luxury Hotels of the World and Hilton. We were able to pay for our accommodations with either Hilton Honors Points or cash while earning Honors Points.

For Hilton Honors members, benefits include, complimentary Wi-Fi, bottled water, access to exclusive experiences and complimentary late checkout when available.

Final Thoughts

Cougar Ridge Lodge is the kind of resort that reminds you that luxury doesn’t need to mean marble lobbies, gilded opulence or white-glove formality.
